Birdability Week 2021

\"

Monday 18th – Sunday 24th October, 2021

\"\"/

Birdability Week is a celebration of birders with disabilities and other health concerns, and an opportunity to share resources and ideas to help the birding community be accessible, inclusive and welcoming to everybody and every body! An annual event held in October and supported by National Audubon, it was inspired by #BlackBirdersWeek, Latino Conservation Week and Let’s Go Birding Together.

The first Birdability Week, held during October 2020, launched Birdability into becoming a nonprofit organization. This year, we are excited to celebrate inclusion, diversity, equity and accessibility (IDEA) in the birding community and the outdoors through online workshops, panels and interactive activities, and we want your Audubon chapter, bird club or nature center to get involved!

#ImABirder

Birding is the act of enjoying wild birds. This means that anyone who enjoys wild birds is a birder! Help us celebrate the diversity of birders by sharing something about you as a birder using the worksheet or social media templates available here. Make sure you tag @birdability!

Are you a birder who goes birding with your two year old so you need other birders to be kind and understanding when they make a lot of noise? Perhaps you’re a birder who just started birding and you’re proud that now you can identify ten birds by sight and sound! Or maybe you’re a birder who cannot stand for very long after your hip replacement, so you like birding from benches? Let’s celebrate the diversity of birders, together!

\"\"/

Support artists who are supporting Birdability!

Stickers, tote bags, t-shirts, note cards, posters… and even a Puffin pillow! During Birdability Week 2021, the following artists will be donating a portion of the proceeds from these items to Birdability. Support our work to ensure birding is for every body, and decorate your life with these beautiful items! More information from the artists’ pages directly. And thank you artists!

#BirdabilityBirders

If you’re a birder with a disability or other health concern, introduce yourself on social media using #BirdabilityBirders and share a little about yourself and what it’s like birding with an access challenge. Perhaps you could share about the sorts of things you need to take into consideration when you’re planning a bird outing, or any handy equipment you use that helps you enjoy birds and nature?
Nondisabled birders, we hope you\’ll learn something new today, and will help us amplify the experiences of #BirdabilityBirders!

Empowering exploration: Going birding with an access challenge panel, 7-8.30pm Eastern.

Curious? We hope so! Join birders – and potential future birders – with disabilities and other health concerns as we discuss their approach to adventure and exploration. What do you think about when planning a birding trip? How do you tackle obstacles, and what happens when something goes wrong? How can you frame your birding exploits to be a tool of empowerment, rather than seeing barriers at every turn? We hope you’ll come away with a new approach to birding!

Closed captions and an American Sign Language interpreter will be provided. This event is free and will be recorded. Donations to support Birdability’s work are appreciated; you can donate at birdability.org/donate

#AccessibilityForMe

There’s often a difference between an “accessible trail” and a birding location that is truly accessible to folks with disabilities and other health concerns. What makes a birding location accessible for you? Which questions on the Birdability Site Review are the most important for you to know ahead of time? Does the surface of the trail matter for you? Does surrounding noise, or shade, or nearby public transport make a big difference for your ability to enjoy the location? Share features that make a birding locations accessible for you, with the hashtag #AccessibilityForMe and help other folks learn what they need to consider when designing trails and holding accessible and inclusive outings.

Accessibility for me: What makes a birding location truly accessible? webinar, 4-5pm Eastern.

A birding location opens a new boardwalk and describes it on their website as “accessible”… but when you arrive, you discover it really isn’t… To help you submit Birdability Site Reviews to the Birdability Map, and to help you know where to hold accessible and inclusive bird outings, as well as learn a few things you may never have considered, join Birdability Coordinator and occupational therapist Freya McGregor to learn what can make a birding location truly accessible. We’ll hear from special guests explaining what they need, and get ideas on trail design and upgrades you can advocate for in your community.

This event is being held in partnership with National Audubon. Donations to support Birdability’s work are appreciated; you can donate at birdability.org/donate

#WelcomingAndInclusiveBirders

It feels good to know you’re welcome and that others want to include you, whether you’re a beginner birder, new in a birding group, you’re young, female, BIPOC, LGBTQIA+ or have a disability or other health concern. Share what things others can do to help you feel welcome and included as a birder, whether out on a trail, at a bird club meeting or in the online birding community. Read others’ ideas, too – you might learn a strategy you can apply next time you meet another birder!

A Good IDEA for Birding panel, 7-8.30pm Eastern.

Join in for a conversation about inclusion, diversity, equity and access (IDEA) in birding and the outdoors, and learn what you can do to be a more welcoming and inclusive birder for folks who are BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, who have a disability or other health concern, and who share intersecting identities. Come away with more understanding and appreciation for your fellow birder, and strategies you can start implementing immediately for yourself and any groups or organizations you’re a part of to help ensure birding truly is for everybody!

Read more about the event, including the panelists, on the Birdability Events Calendar. This event is being held in partnership with National Audubon.

This workshop is designed for participants aged 3+. Closed captions will be provided. Download instructions, including a list of items to gather, here.

Slow Birding™ Guided Workshop, 10-11am Eastern.

Sometimes, the best birding happens when we stay in one place and let the birds reveal themselves. This online experience is open to beginner and experienced birders alike. Birders with limited mobility will find that Slow Birding™ is a practice that focuses on nature connection without the need to travel or cover long distances. This workshop will include a listening component, so it will be accessible for people who are blind or have low vision. Closed captions will be provided. This event will not be recorded. To attend, please register here.

Participants can choose a spot outdoors or near a window; find a spot where you feel safe and comfortable to spend some quiet time with birds. You may want to have: a beverage, a journal, something to write with, binoculars (although these are not required), a comfortable chair.

\"

Who?
An individual, local Audubon chapter, young birder’s club chapter, a bird banding station, a group of friends, families… Anyone can host an accessible bird outing! These outings are designed intentionally for birders (and beginner birders) who experience an accessibility challenge as a result of a disability or other health concern. (That’s 1 in 4 Americans, according to the US Census Bureau in 2020!) Read on to find out how easy it is, and check out the Birdability Guidance Documents at birdability.org to help as you plan your event.

What?
An accessible and inclusive birding outing. Check out Writing Bird Outing Event Descriptions when drafting the write-up of your outing.

Where?
Deciding where to hold an accessible outing can be tricky if you’re not sure where to start. Read about Access Considerations for folks with disabilities and other health concerns, then Contribute to the Birdability Map by submitting a Birdability Site Review for your location so potential attendees can find out important information ahead of time.

When?
Any time during October. Birdability Week is October 18th-24th, but we are encouraging everyone to host accessible outings all month long! Ideally, accessible, inclusive outings will become a regular part of your field trip calendar – we hope that helping us celebrate Birdability Week will be the push you needed to start holding them monthly!

Why?
Because birding is for everybody! But not everybody knows that. Creating outings that are designed for folks who may need to go slower, take rests or who need some additional time and understanding to get on to a bird helps more people feel welcome and included in the birding community. With 25% of us having some kind of disability, and the vast majority of us experiencing an accessibility challenge at some point in our lives (perhaps just by virtue of getting older and slowing down), it’s in all of our best interests. We hope you’ll help us celebrate Birdability Week 2021 by hosting an accessible outing in your community!

How?
You may find it helpful to read the Steps to Implement Accessible Bird Outings. It’s one thing to think, ‘Build it and they will come’, but it’s a very different thing to be invited to participate. Make sure you reach out to folks with access challenges in your local community and invite them to come birding with you – they may not have realized they could be a birder. There are lots of ideas in the above Guidance Document for different community groups you might try and connect with and invite on your outing.

Once it’s planned, use the form below to let us know about your event so we can share about it and help celebrate the work you’re doing to ensure that birding truly is for everybody and every body!

More resources that may be useful:

Unfortunately, we do have to ask you not to call your event a “Birdability outing” (or similar), as we’ve been informed this could create liability issues for Birdability (the organization). Instead, calling it an accessible, inclusive outing (or something else entirely) works!

Don’t forget to share about Birdability and Birdability Week in your newsletter and on social media – you’re always invited to link to the Birdability website or share or repost any of our social media posts. And keep amplifying and uplifting birders in your community who experience accessibility challenges, and holding accessible outings. Together we can ensure that birding truly is for everybody and every body!

Congratulations to these groups and organizations for being intentionally inclusive by holding an accessible outing! We hope these will become a regular part of your programming, thereby ensuring that birding truly is for everybody and every body!

For more information about any of these events, please visit the event’s or organizer’s website — Birdability is not involved in planning or hosting them, so directing your questions to the organizer is the best way to find out more. They are listed here so we can amplify and celebrate the work they’re doing, and in the hope it makes it easy to find accessible, inclusive events near you! If you would prefer to search by date, or you cannot access the map, the same information is written out below the map.

Philly\’s Little Sit for Birdability Week 2021 at Bartram\’s Garden, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Host organization or group: Philly Queer Birders, In Color Birding Club, Feminist Bird Club.

Date of outing: 10/17/2021, 8-11am Eastern.

Outing event description: Join Philly Queer Birders, In Color Birding Club, and Feminist Bird Club for a stationary birding event, the Little Sit, at Bartram\’s Garden on Sunday, October 17th 8am-11am! This will be a morning of intentionally accessible birding in support of Birdability Week! Birdability Week is a celebration of birders with disabilities and is an effort to make birding more accessible for all. We encourage people with all skill levels to attend (even if you have never been birding!) and if you have an accessibility question, request, or need, please include it in the registration form. All are welcome!
What\’s a \”little sit?\” The Little Sit is our answer to a typically day-long, stationary birding event called a \”big sit,\” where groups try to see as many birds in one location as possible. For our event, folks are welcome to show up at any time between 8am-11am and stay for as long or as short as they want. We\’ll have a few light snacks and encourage people to bring outside chairs, picnic blankets, or anything that will make you comfortable spending a morning birding in one location (rather than walking). We\’ll have name tags where you can also write your pronouns if you want and so you can easily meet other birding friends!
Accessibility info:
– The restrooms in the stable yard each have a wheelchair-accessible stall, though the restroom doors are not automated. A water fountain is located outside the bathrooms. Please note, bathrooms open at 9am.
– There is a step down to enter the Bartram house, and stairs with a handrail to the upper floors.
– We plan to host the sit on the south side of the Bartram House, just a short walk from the parking lot. There is a paved path to get to the area. Google Maps location: https://goo.gl/maps/Xv2AJwXnDCSxih5WA
– There are two accessible parking spaces in the parking lot.
– The sit will last 3 hours, though birders can show up and leave at their leisure.
– We will try to provide extra chairs for folks who need (if you have extras, consider bringing them!) as there is only one bench in this area of the garden.
– We do not currently have a cap on attendees as we want to welcome as many birders as possible, but we could see as many as 50 people throughout the morning (though likely not all at once).
– Masks are not required outside, but we welcome and respect folks masking to their comfort level. Masks are required inside, so make sure to bring one for the restrooms, etc.
Bartram\’s Garden is located at 5400 Lindbergh Blvd. and can be accessed using the 36 trolley, by car, or by bike (bike racks on site). Several extra binoculars will be available for those who need and we may have a scope on-site to view birds farther away and more clearly! We can expect to see songbirds migrating, peak raptor migration, and though we won\’t be down at the water, we may be able to see waterfowl overhead since we\’ll be close to the river.
If you have any questions, you can DM any of the groups or reach out over email to Elise (she/they) phillyqueerbirders@gmail.com, Jason (he/him) incolorbirding@gmail.com, or Karla (they/she) feministbirdclub.philly@gmail.com. We look forward to a great morning of birding with all of you!

Please contact us if there are access considerations we have not included and/or to let us know about accommodations needed for you and/or your family. This free event is being put on in partnership with the Upper Thames River Conservation Authority (UTRCA) and the Bird Friendly London team.
This trail at Kilally Meadows (accessed by Windermere Road) is entirely paved (asphalt). The trail is approximately 0.8 km in length and is \”out-and-back\” rather than a loop, so it would be 1.6km total; however the group can turn back at any point depending on group consensus and timing. There is a slight slope up and down at some points, but the trail is relatively flat overall. The trail is at least 1.5m wide with occasional pull outs. There are 2 large cracks on the trail. Staff and volunteers will be available to assist with navigating these cracks and you can email Julie (readj@thamesriver.on.ca) if you would like to see photos. Depending on the weather, there may be a few muddy sections and some leaves on the trail. This path is shared with cyclists, who are mandated to go a maximum of 20km per hour or less, however staff and volunteers will alert cyclists to our presence and ask them to please dismount their bicycles while passing our group, if possible. There are no benches on the trail, but the walk will be slow-paced with time allotted for frequent breaks or as needed. Some sections of the trail are shaded and some are not. You may be able to hear some nearby traffic noise or noise from the nearby baseball diamond at this well used spot. Unfortunately, there are no bathrooms or water fountains on-site. We recommend bringing your water bottle with you.
Parking lot Description: The Windermere parking lot is paved (asphalt) with 2 signed accessible parking spaces close to the trailhead and 2 more signed accessible parking spaces in the same parking lot but closer to Dan Puhlam field. 2 of these 4 accessible spots have a space which will accommodate vans. There is no curb or step from the parking lot to the path; there is a small, gradual paved incline.
Walk Leader: This walk will be led by Julie Read, Community Education Supervisor (Fanshawe) for UTRCA. Julie is a lifelong birder and enthusiastic naturalist who has experience leading nature walks for everyone from babies to seniors, from a diversity of backgrounds, including folks with different abilities, new Canadians and members of BIPOC communities and LGBTQ+ communities. She is excited to share her love of birds with you as well as learn about birds together with everyone joining the event!
Staff and Volunteers: This event will be led by an UTRCA Environmental Educator with First Aid training and a vulnerable persons check. Additional trained volunteers with will join us. We expect to cover a distance of approximately 1-1.5 miles round trip and will be moving at a slow, comfortable pace. If you do not own a pair we will try to have some loaner ones available for you to borrow. Masks are not required since we will be outdoors. We will send a reminder email with additional details and a map a few days before the outing. Kathy Balman will be leading this outing. Kathy has several medical conditions including Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, Posterior Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome, Adrenal Insufficiency, anxiety, OCD and dyslexia. Most days her medical challenges are invisible, however she has had 13 surgeries and struggles with chronic pain daily. Some days she is a wheelchair user or needs the assistance of a cane and several joint braces to enjoy the outdoors. In addition to her own experiences with accessibility challenges she has also worked with adults and children that have autism, dwarfism, Down’s syndrome, dyslexia, dyscalculia, food allergies, Asperger\’s, ADD, anxiety and more. Feminist Bird Club 5th Anniversary Little Sit at Green-wood Cemetery, Brooklyn, New York

Host organization or group: Feminist Bird Club

Date of outing: 10/31/2021, 9-10.30am or 10.30am-12pm Eastern.

Outing event description: Feminist Bird Club is Five Years Old! We’re celebrating five years of birds and fun by visiting one of our favorite places in New York City: Green-Wood Cemetery. Yes, on Halloween. We’re doing things a bit differently this time around. Instead of a trip through Green-Wood, we’re going to do a 3-hour Little Sit in a single location, paired with some low-key guided explorations for those who feel like it. This event page is for Group 1, 9 AM to 10:30 AM .
The event will be run in two time blocks, with 25 attendees apiece. Each block will be 1.5 hours in duration. You’re free to bird around Green-Wood before and after that block of time at the Little Sit, and there’s nothing dictating that you have to stick around for the whole 1.5 hours. There will be plenty of knowledgeable birders to help you, should you need or want it!
Note: You MUST pre-register for a block of time at the Little Sit in order to attend the event. This is to help us mitigate Covid risks and to be respectful of other visitors in the area. Green-Wood is still an active cemetery with people regularly visiting the resting places of loved ones.
Accessibility: One of the reasons why we picked Green-Wood is its many paved roads and the ability to drive to different spots in the area, which will hopefully help those with mobility challenges to attend. If you need accommodation, please register for the event and then email us at feministbirdclub@gmail.com with ACCOMMODATION in the subject line, and we will work with you to make sure you can get to and from Green-Wood’s front gates to the Little Sit site.
Exact location of the Little Sit will be emailed to registered participants before the event, as will details about pre- and post-shift birding.
